Attorney Profile

Peter John Hoeper, Attorney at Law

On November 9, 2005 I appeared before the Wisconsin Supreme Court to make an oral argument. I had argued there before and was aware of some of the unique procedures in such arguments – like the fact that Justices can ask questions at any time during the argument, and the "stop sign" timing system (green to yellow to red) at which time you must conclude. The premium is on knowing your case thoroughly, anticipating questions and arguments, and being able to return to the thread of an argument after an interruption. I was happy to be able to do so.

My law student daughter was present during this Supreme Court appearance and asked how long it took to prepare. The answer was, "All my life."

In 1972, I was awarded my juris doctor degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School. I played wing forward for the Wisconsin Rugby Football Club during my law school days, and in the summertime enjoyed spending time at my parents' Northern Wisconsin lake cottage, waterskiing every day with my two brothers, as well as fishing, swimming and sailing. In the fall of 1972, I started to work for E. W. Hooker, who was running what at that time was the oldest law firm in a single family in the State of Wisconsin. Mr. Hooker was a very well respected trial lawyer who immediately gave me the opportunity to do court trials, jury trials and appellate work, including my first Wisconsin Supreme Court appearance early in my career at a time when most of my classmates were still carrying around other lawyers' briefcases. I learned the importance of doing my own case development and strategy.

Today, I continue to believe that, when doing a case, it is important for an attorney to take his own depositions, conduct his own witness interviews, and consider exhibits and development of the evidence. Over the years, I honed my skills by attending various educational seminars, including the National Institute of Trial Practice.

The nature of the practice that I continue has allowed me to have diversified experiences in helping clients with real estate transactions, estate planning and probate, general trial work, and personal injury recoveries, among other aspects of the practice.

Family and me focus on the recreational activities that I enjoyed during my youth. The nature of my legal practice allowed me the opportunity to gain experience and refine my skills to provide a wide variety of legal services to a client base, which I have continued to serve over the years. A unique aspect of my practice is that my experienced staff and I devote a considerable amount of time each year in assisting clients with the preparation of their individual and business state and federal income taxes. I have found over the years that this experience allows both a better connection with the community and also grounding in the realities of the everyday lives of my client base. It also allows me to factor tax considerations into various aspects of my civil trial work.

At Hoeper Law Offices, we look forward to the opportunity of assisting both the returning and new clients in the resolution of their legal problems. I have assisted clients in many different Wisconsin counties. The bulk of our cases are brought in Fond du Lac, Dodge, Green Lake, Jefferson, Marquette, Columbia and Waushara Counties.
